X does not remove 98% of disinformation and hate speech related to the Israel-Hamas conflict

The importance of content moderation on X (formerly Twitter) has become even more evident with the recent wave of violence between Israel and Hamas. A new study finds that the platform appears unable or uninterested in removing posts that violate its own rules on hate and misinformation.

O Center for Combating Digital Hate (CCDH) claims to have identified 200 tweets related to the Israel-Hamas conflict that clearly violate Israel's policies X – such as racist, inhumane content or hateful images. After reporting these tweets to former Twitter's content moderators on October 31 via the platform's official reporting tool, the CCDH states that 196 of these tweets were still visible a week later.

Imran Ahmed, founder and CEO of CCDH, said: “Our analysis of X's content moderation systems reveals that hatemongers appear to have the freedom to post anti-Semitic and hateful content on the X platform. Elon Musk".

Of the 101 profiles identified by the CCDH, only one was suspended and two were “blocked”. Posts reported on these accounts have accumulated more than 24 million views.

Furthermore, it was found that 43% of the 101 accounts that published hateful content were verified, which, under Musk's management, implies that they paid for verification that gives legitimacy, authority and greater visibility to their tweets. This CCDH report follows an October NewsGuard analysis that revealed that about 74% of the most viral posts about the Israel-Hamas conflict were being made by verified accounts on X, promoting misinformation.
