Xi Jinping wins unprecedented third term as president of China

Xi Jinping obtained, this Friday (10), an unprecedented third presidential term in China after a vote by the country's parliamentary body, ratifying his status as the most powerful leader in decades. The result of the deputies' vote, released shortly before 11:00 am local time (00:00 Brasília time), was overwhelming: 2.952 votes in favor, none against and no abstentions. 🇨🇳

It was not an unexpected result given that Parliament is in practice subjugated to the Communist Party (PCC), which in October re-elected him for another five years as general secretary and head of the Army, the two most important positions in the country.

The only candidate for President, the 69-year-old president received a new mandate as head of state, a position he has held since 2013.

The last few months have been difficult for Xi Jinping, with large demonstrations at the end of November against its “zero Covid” policy and a wave of deaths after the abandonment of this strategy in December.

Such sensitive issues were avoided during the annual session of Parliament, a carefully choreographed event in which Xi ally Li Qiang is expected to replace Li Keqiang as prime minister.

The National People's Congress (CNP) meeting in Beijing is also expected to formally elect a new vice president to replace Wang Qishan.

These days, deputies focused on an institutional reform project that aims to strengthen the Ministry of Science and Technology and China's capabilities in the digital sector.

Xi Jinping established as a priority the development of these sectors in search of China's self-sufficiency in the face of what Beijing sees as a policy of “containment” by the West to impede the development of the Asian giant.
