Amazon removes 'AI-generated' books after author denies writing them

Five books for sale on Amazon were removed after a writer complained that the titles were falsely listed as having been written by her. The books, which the author believes were produced by artificial intelligence (AI), were also listed on the Amazon-owned website Goodreads. 📚

“It feels like a violation because it’s low-quality material with my name on it,” Jane Friedman told Guardian. The author from Ohio, United States, wrote several books about the publishing industry, and the fraudulent titles imitated her real work.

Friedman was first informed about the fraudulent titles by a reader, who noticed the listings on Amazon and sent her an email. Having had experience with AI tools such as ChatGPT, Friedman, after reading the first few pages, immediately thought that the books had been generated by AI.

The books were removed from Amazon and Goodreads on Tuesday (8), after the author filed a formal complaint.

When asked about Friedman's case, an Amazon spokesperson told the British newspaper: “We have clear content guidelines governing which books can be listed for sale, and we promptly investigate any book when a concern is raised. We welcome author feedback and work directly with authors to resolve any issues raised. We invest heavily to provide a reliable shopping experience and to protect customers and authors against misuse of our services.”
