Cherrypick: AI reduces the consumption of ultra-processed foods by 26%

Cherrypick, which recently changed its name from Lollipop, is a smart meal planning and online shopping app that aims to reduce the consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) by more than a quarter and reduce the risk of obesity.

An analysis of more than 100.000 orders found that users reduced their consumption of Ultra-Processed Foods (UPFs) by 26% compared to before using the app. UPAs make up 29% of a Cherrypick user's diet, approximately half the national average of 55-60%.

UPAs are ready-to-eat foods that have undergone industrial processing and often contain ingredients such as flavor enhancers, hydrogenated oils and sweeteners. Examples include sausages, instant soups and soft drinks. Research links high consumption of UPFs to a greater risk of obesity and chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Cherrypick allows its more than 200.000 users to browse nearly 1.000 recipes and order the ingredients to prepare them. The app partners with the Sainsbury's chain for products and fulfillment, and plans to add additional food retailers in early 2024.

Cherrypick uses artificial intelligence e machine learning to learn what's in each user's pantry and prevent food waste by notifying them about ingredients in a recipe they already have.

In addition to reducing consumption of AUPs, Cherrypick helped users reduce their consumption of ready-to-eat meals. More than half of users (53%) say they consume fewer ready-to-eat meals since they started using the app. Three-quarters (74%) cook five or more meals from scratch a week, compared to 47% before they discovered Cherrypick. Overall, eight in ten users (82%) say they are generally eating healthier than before using the app.

The tool also helps users spend less time and money on their weekly food shopping. 80% of families spend more than an hour a week planning meals and purchasing groceries online, while the average app user spends less than 20 minutes, saving 35 hours annually on this task. The average cost per portion of Cherrypick’s “spend less” range is £2,11, 30% less than an equivalent recipe kit meal.

Tom Foster-Carter, CEO and co-founder of Cherrypick, said: “Half the global population will be overweight or obese by 2035. But people are not to blame. Ready-to-eat foods are to blame. Ready-to-eat and delivery meals are full of ultra-processed, calorie-dense ingredients. Old-fashioned convenience is hurting us, but busy families don't have the time or tools to fight back.

“Cherrypick is helping to build a new era of convenience, where everyone can eat better, and health, convenience and value are no longer in tension.”
