Since 2016, the South Korean company LG Electronics has been presenting a series of projects focused on the metaverse, which has made the company occupy first place on the list among those that have registered the most patents. Then, the also South Korean Samsung appears in second place in the ranking. For research organizers, what makes these companies ambitious powerhouses in the metaverse are their display and semiconductor color schemes. In the market, Asian companies prefer to have a presence in equipment through components, rather than in other markets that favor finished products.

In third place, appearing as a North American power in the race for the metaverse, is Meta. This is nothing new, considering that the company has been doing everything to popularize the idea across the four corners of the globe. Including its CEO, Zeckerberg, betting that between 5 and 10 years the metaverse will turn around.
Asian and North American markets share patent ranking
In the top 5, with more discreet participation but of equal importance, Huawei, with patents for image processing and display, and Microsoft, trying to debunk Meta's idea of pioneering, close the list. Other companies like ByteDance, from TikTok, Intel, Apple and Sony are also investing in the metaverse.
The 20 largest companies in the field have registered, in total, 7.760 patents related to virtual reality and augmented reality in markets such as Japan, the United States and Europe since 2016, according to the Nikkei e Cyber Creative Institute. The country with the highest number of registrations is the USA, with 57%, followed by South Korea with 19% and China with 12%. Japan has 8%.
