Spain will invest 8 million euros in metaverse initiatives

The Spanish Ministry of Culture and Sports will allocate 8 million euros to the development of narrative metaverse experiences. The program, scheduled to start in 2023, will offer grants aimed at developing projects along these lines. The objective of the program is to put the country on the path to innovation with transformation initiatives.

Video games and the metaverse are in the sights of countries as cultural plans, taking into account that they can shape people's lives in the near future. The project, titled  “Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan”, published on the 16th, will be formulated using resources made available by the European Union.

Spain wants to stimulate the economy through video games and the metaverse

Spain sees these initiatives as possibilities to strengthen its economy. In this way, it presents project incubation projects in this area, aiming to be at the cutting edge when it comes to stimulating the metaverse. According to the ministry, in 2021, 6,9 million video games were sold in Spain, one million consoles and 3,4 million related accessories. A South Korea, for example, has been stimulating productivity in areas related to web3 for some time now. 

The resources must be delivered in the form of annual or multi-annual donations to companies in the sector. Spain's Minister of Culture, Miquel Iceta, says that the grants “will contribute to the promotion of projects by our SMEs (small and medium-sized companies) and our independent workers, thus consolidating Spain's image as a reference audiovisual hub, also in the video game sector”.

According to the minister, the intention is “to transform Spain into an exporter of audiovisual products, placing the video game sector in a competitive situation in relation to other countries”.
