“Giant plagiarism machine”: Breaking Bad creator criticizes use of AI in scripts

Vince Gilligan, creator of the hit series Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, criticized the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to write scripts and "resurrect" artists who have died. The screenwriter said that, upon learning that the tool ChatGPT was able to follow instructions to create complete texts, he thought that the human race was “finished as a species”.

“I'm not saying, like in 'The Terminator', that machines are going to exterminate us, but who wants to live in a world where creativity is given to machines?” questionou gilligan. “I think [AI] is bullshit. It is a giant plagiarism machine, in its current form. I think the ChatGPT knows what it's writing like a toaster knows it's making toast. There’s no intelligence – it’s a marvel of marketing.”

The screenwriter also stated that he believes that the artificial intelligence can reach a level that threatens human creativity, but he reinforced that the discussion of using them to replace professionals comes from “a bunch of billionaires trying to become trillionaires, selling this as some kind of important radical change”.
