TikTok can generate music with AI; know more

TikTok is now testing a feature that allows more people to exercise their music composition skills with the help of artificial intelligence (AI).

AI Song generates songs from text prompts with the help of the great Bloom language model. Users can write letters in the text field when making a post. O TikTok, then it will recommend AI Song to add sounds to the post, and users can switch the song genre.

“Technically, it's not an AI music generator — the name will likely change, and it's currently in the testing phase,” Barney Hooper, a TikTok spokesperson, said in an email to The Verge. “Any music used is from a pre-saved catalog created within the business. In essence, it combines lyrics with pre-saved music, drawing on three genres: pop, hip-hop and EDM.”

The feature was first noticed last week.

AI Song doesn't appear to be available to everyone yet, but some TikTok users have already started trying it out. So far, the results are not great. Many are out of tune despite the availability of automatic tuning for vocals. See this example from TikTok user Jonah Manzano, who created a song that tried to make the word “comedy” have more syllables than it needs. Another user, Kristi Leilani, somewhat recreated a Britney Spears song, but, again, with very out of tune vocals.

AI-generated songs, however, are nothing new to TikTok. The song “Heart on My Sleeve” generated by AI in the style of Drake and The Weeknd went viral on the platform. Bad Bunny also criticized people for listening to an AI-generated imitation posted on TikTok.

TikTok is not the only platform to adopt generative AI capabilities for its users. YouTube has started testing a music creation feature that lets users make music from text prompts or a hummed melody. Dream Track allows 30-second snippets in the style of other popular artists.

Seeking to be more transparent, TikTok has implemented other features that help identify AI-created content in the app and updated its rules requiring users to be upfront about the use of AI in their content.
