Tim Burton criticizes art created by artificial intelligence

Filmmaker Tim Burton, known for films such as 'Edward Scissorhands' and 'Beetlejuice', spoke out against artificial intelligence image generators after a Buzzfeed article recreated famous Disney characters using AI with Burton's aesthetic.

In an interview with the British outlet Independent, Tim Burton said he is acutely aware that artificial intelligence poses a greater threat to animation than any other art form. However, he was surprised by the creation of the characters: “I can't describe the feeling it gives. It reminded me of when other cultures say, 'Don't take my picture because it's taking your soul.”

The AI-generated examples were created by Buzzfeed and included a pale-faced Sleeping Beauty, dressed in black and with stitches on her cheeks; a Pocahontas running through a haunted forest; and a Snow White with black hair and big, macabre eyes.

Burton acknowledges that some of them were “pretty good,” but that doesn’t mean he enjoys seeing his own artistic talent cloned: “What it does is suck something out of you. It removes something from your soul or psyche; this is very upsetting, especially if it has to do with you. It’s as if a robot took your humanity, your soul.”
