French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard, one of the fathers of Nouvelle Vague, died "peacefully" this Tuesday at the age of 91 at his home in the small town of Rolle in Switzerland, his family announced in a statement.
“Filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard passed away on September 13, 2022, announce his wife Anne-Marie Miéville and his producers. There will be no ceremony. Jean-Luc Godard passed away peacefully at his home, alongside his loved ones. He will be cremated,” the statement said.
The note was released by the family's legal and tax advisor, Patrick Jeanneret. Jean-Luc Godard resorted to assisted suicide.
When contacted by AFP, Jeanneret explained that the announcement should be made within two days, but that the statement had to be written hastily after information about Godard's death was leaked to the press.
He died at home, next to his wife, the counselor said.
“The cremation will take place within two days, perhaps on Wednesday,” he added, before stating that the “ashes will remain with his wife.”
Jean-Luc Godard left his mark among generations of cinephiles, as one of the fathers of the Nouvelle Vague, with classics such as “Haunted” or “The Contempt”.
He and François Truffaut led the “Nouvelle Vague”, which shook the world of cinema in the 1960s.
In 1987, Godard received an honorary César for his lifetime of work and, in 2010, an honorary Oscar for his lifetime achievement. The Cannes Film Festival also awarded him a special Palme d'Or in 2018.
