Man arrested after parachuting from Eiffel Tower

An "experienced climber" climbed the Eiffel Tower this Thursday (17) before parachuting from this emblematic monument in Paris and being arrested, according to several sources.

The man entered the monument shortly after 05:00 am (00:00 Brasília time), when it was still closed, and was quickly detected, the site's management company, SETE, said in a statement.

The climber climbed the east pillar with a backpack, a police source said. While security forces tried to stop him at this 330-meter-high monument, the man performed a BASE jump with a parachute from a fixed point.

After landing at the Émile Anthoine stadium, he was arrested and taken to the police station for putting other people's lives at risk, according to the police source.

SETE regretted that this type of “irresponsible” actions endanger the people who work in this structure visited by 5,9 million people in 2022.

The monument has recorded other disturbances in recent days.

Two false bomb alerts forced evacuations twice on August 12. Additionally, two drunk American tourists were found sleeping in the early hours of Monday at the Eiffel Tower, where they spent the night after gaining entry the day before.
