Councilor is victim of harassment in Santa Catarina (with video)

Councilor Carla Ayres (PT) was pulled by the arm, hugged and kissed by councilor Marquinhos da Silva (PSC), in the middle of a session at the Florianópolis City Council, Santa Catarina. The video with the images was posted by the councilor on her Instagram account. The harassment occurred on the day the creation of the Women's Attorney's Office was approved to combat violence and gender discrimination.

“On the day we approved the Women's Attorney's Office in the Florianópolis City Council, another scene of harassment that we need to fight to ensure that it does not occur on the streets and in parliaments of our country. It’s no joke if only one laughed!”, said Carla Ayres in a post on Instagram.

In a note also published on Instagram, councilor Marquinhos da Silva apologizes for what happened.

“I recognize my mistake in approaching the councilor in an inconvenient way, without her authorization, and in light of this I sincerely apologize to her and to all the women who felt offended by my action. I emphasize that at no time did I act in a malicious manner, however, I was unfortunate in invading her space.”

The number of femicides recorded in the first half of this year in Brazil is 10,8% higher compared to the same period in 2019, which was not affected by the dynamics imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. On average, four women were murdered per day between January and June, totaling 699 victims (3,2% more than last year).
