In the context of political disputes, memes are generally created to irreverently ironize or criticize facts or authorities. But, in these elections, memes were mixed with the political strategies of campaigns on and off the networks. On the eve of the first round, we remember some of the most memorable moments of the digital electoral race.
Increasingly popular in digital media, candidacies and parties themselves began to surf the formats, jargon and 'trends' of social networks to speak the language of connected voters:
But digital natives have not forgiven politicians and candidates during this election year. Different barrages of memes engaged people to discuss serious issues, such as President Bolsonaro's statements attacking the electoral system without evidence, credibility of electoral polls made by traditional institutes and the importance of vote as a tool of democracy.
It seems like it's been a lot longer, but about 6 months ago pop artists like Anitta, Leonardo Di Caprio and Luisa Sonza ran the huge digital campaign that encouraged young Brazilians to vote for the first time and get their voter registration card.
Among the mobilization strategies, there were partnerships with influencers, meme profiles that are very popular among millennials – such as @saquinhodelixo and @meltedvideos. Tiktok Videos, hashtags, messages from empowerment on Twitter, and other content went viral through the movement.
Before May 4th, the deadline established by the TSE for enlistment, Brazil gained more than 2 million young voters between 16 and 17 years old. In relation to 2014 and 2018, the last years of elections, voter growth was 47.2% and 57,4%, respectively. (Jota)
