The legacy of a war

Preliminary monitoring of the conflict in Ukraine, carried out by the UN, showed the existence of significant environmental impacts. Incidents of air, water and land pollution have already been identified.

The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) is supporting the Ukrainian government in remotely monitoring the environmental impact on its territory, as a result of the conflict that is ravaging the country.

This week, donors, agencies and member states meet in Lugano, Switzerland, to discuss the reconstruction of Ukraine.

In the words of Osnat Lubrani, the United Nations’ top official in Ukraine, “restoring Ukraine’s environment must be at the top of the agenda.”

Initial monitoring points to significant impacts on urban and rural environments, including incidents of air pollution and potentially serious contamination of groundwater and surface water, which could leave the country and region with a toxic legacy for generations to come.
