Bolsonaro's mountain of cases before the authorities

Jair Bolsonaro and his wife Michelle will appear before the police this Thursday (31) to answer accusations of embezzlement of jewelry received as official gifts when he was president of Brazil, an investigation that could lead to him being arrested.

Bolsonaro, who in June was declared ineligible for eight years for spreading disinformation about the electoral system, will testify for the fifth time since leaving the presidency on December 31.

The former president has already been questioned by the police in Brasília about the jewelry issue, about the January 8 coup acts by his supporters, about an alleged coup d'état plan and about the alleged falsification of vaccination certificates.

These are the ongoing investigations against Bolsonaro, as well as those that his children also face.

Before the police

The former president testifies this Thursday for alleged diversion of several sets of jewelry presented by Saudi Arabia, some of which had entered Brazil irregularly in 2019.

The police suspect that Bolsonaro and Michelle participated, together with several collaborators, in a scheme to sell official gifts received from foreign countries for the former president's “illicit enrichment”.

This includes a set of diamond necklace and earrings intended for the former first lady, valued by the press at R$16,5 million, and a luxury watch that was reportedly sold and later repurchased in the United States.

The case could constitute crimes of money laundering and embezzlement, punishable by imprisonment.

Bolsonaro denied having committed any crime in his previous statement in April to the Federal Police (PF).

He also denied in May having participated in the alleged falsification of his vaccination certificate against Covid-19, as well as those of other allies.

Before the STF

Bolsonaro faces five investigations at the Federal Supreme Court (STF), subject to prison sentences.

Four of them were opened during his presidential term, while the latest investigation treats him as the alleged instigator of the attacks on the headquarters of the Three Powers on January 8, in Brasília.

In one of the cases, Bolsonaro is accused of interfering with the police to protect family members suspected of corruption.

He is also being investigated for spreading disinformation about electronic voting machines.

The other two investigations are for having leaked confidential information about a cyber attack on the electoral court and for having associated the vaccine against covid-19 with an alleged risk of contracting HIV.

He must also respond to proceedings in lower courts.

Among them, he is accused of “subversion to order” for his participation in demonstrations with anti-democratic chants on September 7, 2021.

Se fosse condenado à pena máxima por esses crimes, o ex-presidente enfrentaria almost 40 years in prison.

Before the electoral justice

The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) declared Bolsonaro ineligible on June 30 for abuse of political power and misuse of the media, by attacking the electoral system without evidence, three months before losing the October 2022 elections to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

His defense will appeal to the STF.

Another 15 cases are ongoing at the TSE for which he could receive new convictions.

This includes actions for verbal attacks on the electoral system or for the alleged use of the public machine for one's own benefit during elections.

Your children, another concern

Four of the former president's children – three of them politicians – also faced criminal suspicions, the most recent being Jair Renan.

The youngest son was the target of a police operation last week for money laundering. In 2021, he had already been called to testify in another investigation into alleged bribe payments by businesspeople to close deals with the government.

Flávio Bolsonaro, senator from Rio de Janeiro, was accused in 2020 of embezzling public money from the legislative assembly, through “splitting” part of the salaries of employees in his office. The investigation was archived.

Carlos Bolsonaro, councilor for Rio de Janeiro, is being investigated for a money embezzlement scheme through the hiring of “ghost” employees in his office.

Eduardo Bolsonaro, federal deputy for São Paulo, was investigated for purchasing apartments with cash between 2011 and 2016.
