Brazil extends greenhouse gas emission reduction target

The Brazilian government announced, this Wednesday (20), the expansion of its target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

At the opening of the Climate Ambition Summit, an event that is part of the program of the 78th General Assembly of the United Nations, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva, read a letter on behalf of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva that extends the Brazilian emissions reduction target from 37% to 48% by 2025 and from 50% to 53% by 2030

“It is not enough to eliminate deforestation to resolve the issue of climate change. The world requires a broader energy transition. Brazil, which already had one of the most ambitious climate goals in the world, decided to go further. I am pleased to announce today that we will update our nationally determined contribution under the Paris Agreement. We will return to the level of ambition that we originally presented at COP21 and that had been changed by the previous government”, highlighted the document.

“This despite our historical responsibilities being incomparably smaller than those of rich countries. We are already taking action to return our ambitions to reality”, continued Marina, continuing to read the letter.

“More than 3 billion people are already directly affected by climate change, especially in lower middle-income countries. It is the poorest, women, indigenous people, the elderly, children, young people and migrants who are most impacted. No country should have to choose between fighting global warming or fighting hunger or poverty. This is a false dilemma. We all have an ethical commitment to do both.”
