Taxi driver Márcio Antônio do Nascimento Silva was 58 years old and was hospitalized with heart problems. In June 2020, one of the first months of the pandemic, he became nationally known for replacing the crosses in a protest on Copacabana beach in memory of the victims of covid-19 - among them, his son, who died at 25. The tribute made by Rio de Paz had been destroyed by a Bolsonarista. The images of a father replacing the crosses in the sand went viral. Márcio was invited to testify at the Covid CPI, of the Federal Senate.
Márcio was the IBGE census coordinator for the Inhaúma subarea. The burial was scheduled for this Tuesday afternoon (4), at the São João Batista Cemetery.
His son, Hugo Dutra do Nascimento, passed away from complications from coronavirus in April 2020 after being hospitalized for 16 days. The young man was healthy and had no comorbidities.
In a statement, Rio de Paz lamented the taxi driver's death and said it would pay tribute by reproducing the scene of the crosses being replaced in the sand.
Two months later, when 40 deaths from the disease had been recorded in the country, Márcio was outraged by the attitude of a resident of Rio de Janeiro who decided to take down the crosses placed in honor of those killed by covid-19. The peaceful act carried out by Rio de Paz had 100 crosses stuck in symbolic holes made with beach sand, with the aim of demanding action from the federal government against the pandemic. (The globe)
“Gostaria, por favor, que as pessoas tivessem mais empatia e compaixão pelas pessoas, pelas vítimas, por todos nós”, disse o pai de Hugo, na época sobre o ocorrido. Relembre a cena:
“He was a defender of life. We will install a replica of the cross he used in Copacabana, the Brazilian flag and a banner with the phrase 'In memory of Márcio Antônio do Nascimento Silva, who bravely defended life and freedom of expression in the country'”, he stated. the person responsible for the NGO, Antonio Carlos Costa, told O Globo. Rio de Paz works with a focus on reducing poverty and violent deaths.
After going viral with the symbolic act of defending protection and prevention measures against the pandemic, Márcio went to Covid’s CPIWhere criticized President Jair Bolsonaro which denied the seriousness of the health crisis and the need for social isolation.
“My pain is not 'mimimi'. It hurts like hell”, said the taxi driver during the CPI. In the session, Márcio called a speech by President Bolsonaro about Covid deaths “mockery”, stating that the “irony” of the head of the Executive in the face of the problem was incomprehensible:
“Three days after burying my son, I heard that fateful sentence: 'So what?' This made me very sick. Every mockery, every smile, every irony. I couldn't understand this.
“I think we deserved an apology from the highest authority in the country. Because it is not a political issue – whether it belongs to one party or another. We are talking about people’s lives”, said Márcio.
Different members from the press and internet users recalled Márcio's actions after his death was confirmed.
