Deforestation alerts in the Amazon break record in February, reveals Inpe

February is not over yet and deforestation alerts in the Legal Amazon have already reached a record for the month. The data, released by the Space Research Institute (Inpe), shows that 209 km² were deforested by February 17th - the highest mark for the month in the entire historical series, which began in 2015. The data was released this Friday (24). 🌳

Although the data refers to just over two weeks, the number is greater than the entire historical series for the month. In February 2022, the old record, the area deforested in Legal Amazon was 198,67 km².

Even in a reduced form, the Amazon continues to be destroyed at the beginning of 2023. In January alone, 198 km² were devastated: an area similar to the loss of almost 640 football fields of forest per day. Although this destruction was 24% lower than that recorded in the same month in 2022, it represented the 3rd largest deforestation for January in 16 years. 🌳
