🌱 England must reduce meat consumption to avoid climate collapse

In an interview with The Guardian newspaper, Henry Dimbleby – lead member of the non-executive board of the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs – stated that the only way to have sustainable land use and avoid ecological collapse is to greatly reduce meat and dairy consumptionsystem. (The Guardian*)

Dimbleby told the Guardian that while asking the public to eat less meat – supported by a mix of incentives and penalties – was politically toxic, it was the only way to meet the country's climate and biodiversity goals.

According to the report, currently, 85% of agricultural land in England is used as pasture for animals or to grow food that becomes food for livestock.

The expert believes a 30% reduction in meat over 10 years is necessary for land to be used sustainably in England.

“If we fail to do this we will not be able to meet our biodiversity or climate targets in this country. We also have a great opportunity to show thought leadership around the world and show them that it can be done, that we can farm sustainably and still feed people,” said Dimbleby.
