Forest area on fire almost doubled in 2022, warns MapBiomas

The area of ​​burned forests in Brazil almost doubled in one year. A MapBiomas survey released this Tuesday (31) shows that around 2,8 million hectares of forest went down in flames in 2022. 🔥

The number represents an increase of 93% compared to the previous year, when the burned area reached approximately 1,4 million hectares.

According to the index, 85% of the area of ​​burned forests occurred in Amazon and most of the fires in the biome occurred in August, September and October last year.

O Fire Monitor from MapBiomas also shows that when taking into account the entire Brazilian territory – not just forest formations – around 16,3 million hectares were burned between January and December last year: an area equivalent to the state of Acre. 😱

This number represents a 14% increase compared to 2021, when around 14,2 million hectares were burned.
