BB will accept carbon credits in rural property auctions

Banco do Brasil (BB) is accepting carbon credits as a form of payment for rural properties. The payment method is unprecedented in Brazil, and, according to the bank, was adopted with the aim of supporting the country's sustainable development. These credits can be used to pay in full or in part for the property.

“The bidding phase is now open, and the dispute session will be online, at 14pm on June 7th, marking World Environment Week”, informed BB, referring to the six properties that will be auctioned in this modality, with discounts of up to 55% in relation to the market value.

“The purchase can occur 100% online, with payment in currency and carbon credit certificates, or in full, in carbon credits. These will be accepted at a maximum unit value of R$88,27 in both possibilities”, informed the bank, highlighting that carbon credits must be generated according to “standards and terms recognized by the regulated market or the voluntary market, such as Verified Carbon Standard”.

It is worth remembering that carbon credits are units of measurement used to quantify and offset greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from human activities. They function as a market mechanism that aims to encourage emissions reductions by allowing companies, governments and organizations to purchase carbon credits to offset their own emissions. These credits are generated by projects that reduce or avoid GHG emissions, such as the implementation of renewable energy, reforestation and energy efficiency projects. The rules and regulations for creating and trading carbon credits vary, but the main certification systems are the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement. These credits play an important role in mitigating climate change by encouraging the transition to a low-carbon economy and encouraging investment in sustainable projects. ⤵️
