Brazil presents Belém's candidacy to host COP30

The Lula government chose the city of Belém, in Pará, as a candidate to host the UN Climate Conference (COP30), which will be held in 2025. The announcement was made this Wednesday (11), after a meeting between the president and the governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho (MDB). According to Lula, the candidacy has already been formalized by Itamaraty. However, the final decision should only be announced during COP28, at the end of this year.

After the election, in a meeting with governors of Amazon and in speech during the COP27, in Egypt, in November, Squid had already declared that he would defend, upon assuming government, the realization of the COP30 in Manaus or Belém.

If the candidacy is approved, it will be the first Climate Conference held in Brazil – and in Amazon. At the end of Michel Temer's administration, the country presented to the ONU a proposal to host COP25 in 2019, but the offer was withdrawn under Jair Bolsonaro's government.
