Intoxicated dogs: Tecnoclean has 4 indicted for contamination of snacks in MG

The Civil Police of Minas Gerais indicted this Monday (5), four representatives of the Minas Gerais company Tecnoclean for the death of 14 dogs in the State. The company - which is also the target of investigations in other regions of the country - is responsible for the chemical substance unsuitable for animal and human consumption that was supplied to Bassar Pet Foods, manufacturer of the canine snack. There are more than 80 cases of deaths of animals poisoned by snacks and more than 100 hospitalizations across the country, according to owners and the police.

The substance responsible for the poisoning is monoethylene glycol, supplied with an adulterated label by Tecnoclean to the food manufacturer, Bassar, as if it were propylene glycol, traditionally used in the food industry.

After three and a half months of investigations, the Minas Gerais Civil Police concluded that Tecnoclean committed a heinous crime of falsification against public health, with intent, in accordance with article 273 of the Penal Code, which provides for a sentence of 10 to 15 years in prison.

“The incorrect identification of the reports was evidenced by the failure in the traceability system by the company Tecnoclean, which buys monoethylene from A&D and changes the label to resell it to Bassar. The incorrect labeling of these barrels, which were stored in the same place, was identified, with monoethylene glycol next to propylene glycol, with Tecnoclean assuming the risk of resulting in death due to contamination of dogs, which occurred in the national territory”, said delegate Danúbia Quadros, responsible for investigations in Minas Gerais.

Danúbia Quadros stated that, regardless of the situation, it is an act of fraud.

“A telephone conversation between employees of the company Tecnoclean and A&D Química e Comércio Eirelle (reseller of the substances) reveals that it was known that the resale of monoethylene glycol is not permitted for food companies, only for industrial companies”, he added.

How did it all happen?

Due to adulteration on the labels, monoethylene glycol ended up being used in the manufacture of snacks by Bassan instead of propylene glycol, traditionally used in the food industry. Therefore, the manufacturer was not implicated in the investigation, which also investigated the companies Crystal Limpe, A&D Química and Eirelle and Pets Commerce.

Only Tecnoclean was found responsible for the poisoning. The company was contacted by the report, but has not yet returned the request for positioning.

In September, the company said it acquired the propylene glycol substance from an importer and resold it.
