Carta da Terra talks with female leaders from Xingu

Carta da Terra, published this week by Earth News, announces a conversation with the sisters Watatakalu and Ana Terra Yawalapiti, from Xingu. Ana Terra is one of the leaders of the Women's Movement of the Xingu Indigenous Land and chief Watatakalu is the coordinator of Atix (Associação Terra Indígena do Xingu), which represents women from 16 peoples of the Xingu, spread across 158 villages. They talk about how they faced sexist aspects of indigenous culture, about the diversity of their people and about the invasions of the Xingu Indigenous Land.

The interview with the sisters Watatakalu and Ana Terra Yawalapiti, which will air from Sunday (16), will be available on Youtube channel from the program Earth News Terra and podcast apps.

🌳 Other highlights of the week:

  • Air quality: because of the fires in Mato Grosso, the Afukuri village, in the Xingu Indigenous Land, recorded air quality 53 times worse than the level acceptable by the World Health Organization (WHO);
  • Loss of fauna: the planet lost 69% of its fauna between 1970 and 2018;
  • Sea level: Five island countries — Maldives, Tuvalu, Marshall Islands, Nauru and Kiribati — are at risk of becoming uninhabitable by 2100, creating 600 refugees.
