UN chief regrets setbacks in human rights achievements

The secretary-general of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, lamented the setbacks in recent years with regard to respect for human rights. He cited as an example the case of Ukraine, invaded by Russian forces a year ago. The statements were made at the opening of the UN Human Rights Council, in Geneva, Switzerland.

Guterres also lamented another boat sinking with migrants in the Mediterranean, which occurred this Sunday (26), in Southern Italy, which left at least 60 people dead, and drew attention to the human rights of refugees.

He called for legal and safe routes to be created for migrants and refugees. He stated that he considers everyone's moral obligation to safeguard human rights.

“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine triggered the most massive violation of human rights that we know to this day”, stated the secretary, adding that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights has been “attacked from all sides”.

The war in Ukraine has “triggered widespread death, destruction and displacement,” Guterres said.

“We retreat”, he added, asking for “new life” to the human rights which are the solution to many of the world's problems, such as the climate emergency and the harmful use of new technologies.

"The human rights they are not a luxury that can be ignored until we find a solution to the world’s other problems”, he highlighted.
