Coal consumption breaks record in 2022

Global consumption of coal, the largest source of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the world, will record a new record in 2022, driven by increased demand in Europe, says a report from the International Energy Agency (IEA). The institution predicts that global consumption of the energy source will increase by 1,2% annually, exceeding 8 billion tons.

The consequence for the climate is that the coal, the most harmful of all energy sources, will continue to be by far the main source of CO2 emissions in the world energy system.

In a scenario of energy crisis, the demand for coal to produce electrical energy has benefited this year from rising gas prices, although the slowdown in the economy has reduced demand for electrical energy.

In China (53% of world consumption), demand was affected by confinements related to Covid-19, but drought and heat waves have increased the need for air conditioning and reduced the use of hydroelectric power.

Europe, faced with the reduction in gas supplies from Russia, will record an increase in gas consumption coal in 2022 for the second year in a row.
