COP27: Lebanon, Israel and Iraq unite to combat climate change

According to the New Arab website, Israel, Lebanon and Iraq agreed to work together with other countries to combat global warming. Even with the political hostility between them, concerns about climate change are a priority.

Israel is at war with Lebanon, all Lebanese are prohibited from having any contact with Israelis. Israel and Iraq do not have any diplomatic relations due to their conflict-filled history.

“The countries of the region share the warming and drying of the climate and, just as they share the problems, they can and must share the solutions. No country can stand alone in the face of the climate crisis,” said Tamar Zandberg, Israel’s minister of environmental protection.

But at the COP27 meeting, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati downplayed any other meaning. He said he was attended by Arab and international authorities but that “there was no contact with any Israeli authority.”

According to Haaretz newspaper, this is the first large-level regional meeting on climate change that Israel has participated in.
