COP27: Bolsonaro's minister criticizes 'forced' reduction of gases and use of jets

The Minister of the Environment, Joaquim Leite, said this Tuesday (15) that environmental policy must be based on the generation of green jobs, and not on an "extremely forced" reduction of greenhouse gas emissions during a speech at the Conference Climate Committee (COP27), in Sharm el-Sheik, Egypt. The holder of the portfolio in the Bolsonaro government also criticized the use of jets, in reference to president-elect Lula, and stated that the world will not be saved by "charitable people".

Bolsonaro is not participating in COP27, but Lula went to Egypt for his first engagement abroad after the results of the elections. The visit has been closely followed by the international community, which expects a change in the protection policies of Amazon after four years of weakening environmental policy during the Bolsonaro administration. The PT member, however, has been the target of criticism for having made the trip aboard a businessman's aircraft. (Curto news)

“Philanthropists, leaders and businesspeople and their always exaggerated number of advisors came in private jets to the luxurious Red Sea resort to demand emissions reduction targets from others, suggesting ultra-modern hydrogen or 100% electric cars, completely disconnected from the reality of different regions. of Brazil and the world”, criticized Leite, in a speech at the UN event.

Vice-president-elect Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) denied that businessman José Seripieri Júnior had lent the aircraft to Lula. “The owner is going along to COP. There is no loan. They are going together on the same plane. More people are going: former governor, political and environmental leaders, all together”, said Alckmin this Monday (14).

Leite also once again attacked partnerships with NGOs working in the environmental area, one of the keynotes of Bolsonaro's speech on the sector over the last four years. “Unlike previous governments, where the focus was to send resources only to NGOs, in recent years we have implemented policies together with the private sector to scale a new green economy with the objective of climate neutrality by 2050,” he said. “The world will not be saved by the charitable, but by the efficient.”

In 2019, the federal government placed partnerships with NGOs signed via Amazon Fund, a program that receives donations from Norway and Germany for actions to preserve the biome. Faced with criticism and changes from the Bolsonaro administration, the Europeans stopped donations. At the time, the environmental area was headed by Ricardo Salles, who left the position in 2021.

After Lula's victory, both countries signaled that they will resume transferring funds to the fund. During the climate conference, the PT member and his entourage – especially the former minister and elected federal deputy Marina Silva (Rede) – have organized meetings with authorities from other countries to forge new alliances in the climate area.
