Check out what happened on social media about COP27 - the United Nations conference on climate change - this Monday (07). This was the second day of the meeting taking place in Egypt.

Leaders were present

The event began with the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, warning that it is no longer possible to ignore climate chaos.

“We are on a road to climate hell with our foot on the gas. Our planet is rapidly approaching tipping points that will make climate chaos irreversible,” she said.

Former US Vice President Al Gore stated during his speech that Brazil “chose to stop destroying the Amazon”, when referring to the results of the second round of the presidential elections.

Representatives from various nations highlighted the meetings and conversations on bilateral and strategic issues.

The Executive Secretary for climate change, Simon Stiell, highlighted an excerpt from his speech in which he warns about compliance with agreements already signed on climate: “we will hold people accountable – whether they are presidents, prime ministers or CEOs. Our policies, our businesses, our infrastructure, our actions must be aligned with the #ParisAgreement.”

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, was present at the event. King Charles III, in turn, sent a video to the largest international meeting to discuss the future of the planet in relation to the environment.

Floods in Pakistan were remembered

“There are moments in our lives that are unforgettable and that leave a deep impression on us. My last visit to Pakistan was one of those moments”, highlighted António Guterres when talking about the floods in Pakistan – worsened by the climate crisis – which killed more than 1.700 people this summer.

Photo of leaders makes it clear that there is little space for women in debates

It was supposed to be a photo to mark the presence of the leaders gathered at the climate summit, but the recording did not please internet users who highlighted the lack of women among world leaders: “a family portrait pose”, said internet users. “Maybe at this point, a woman could help”, says a post mocking the global patriarchy.

For NGOs, the event did not start well…

For Greenpeace, Power Shift Africa and Climate Action Network, the first moments of COP27 were not so good. The NGOs stated in a press conference that, even with the issue of losses and damages related to global warming placed on the agenda, no means of financing for recovery was established.

Unsustainable sponsorship…

Apparently, leaders from around the world flew to Egypt on private or Coca-Cola-sponsored jets. On social media, the topic became the target of criticism:
