Deforestation in the Amazon breaks new record

From January to May this year, the Amazon lost more than 2.000 football fields per day of native forest, the greatest devastation in the last 15 years for the period.

Data collected by the Deforestation Alert System (SAD) of the Amazon Institute of Man and Environment (imazon) point out that, in just 151 days, approximately 3.360 km² were felled.

Analyzing data from the nine states that make up the Legal Amazon, Amazonas, Pará, Mato Grosso and Rondônia stood out. The first of these registered an increase of 109% in relation to deforestation identified on Amazon soil in the same period last year.

What is SAD?

O Deforestation Alert System is a tool, developed by Imazon in 2008, whose function is to monitor the Legal Amazon through satellite images, reporting, monthly, deforestation and forest degradation in the territory.

This Tuesday (21), the Brazilian government, represented by the Minister of Economy, when speaking at the opening of the week of events promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), at the Itamaraty Palace, classified Brazil as “the greatest green power on the planet”.

Amid attempts by President Jair Bolsonaro's government to advance negotiations to include Brazil in the list of OECD members, Guedes labeled the country as a “decisive part of environmental preservation”.

In his speech, Hamilton Mourão, in turn, highlighted the “commitment to sustainable development” as one of the values ​​of the federal government.

No reference was made to the latest data that confirmed the record deforestation in the Amazon.
