The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, speaking at the opening of the event, called for “drastic action” so that the volume of plastic in the oceans does not exceed the total number of fish in 2050. He also mentioned the problem of excessive fishing, which is “ending fish stocks” and appealed to governments , arguing that “it is not possible to have a healthy planet without a healthy ocean”.
