Deforestation in the Amazon falls in January, but is still the 3rd highest in 16 years, warns Imazon

Even in a reduced form, the Amazon continues to be destroyed at the beginning of 2023. In January alone, 198 km² were devastated: an area similar to the loss of almost 640 football fields of forest per day. Although this destruction was 24% lower than that recorded in the same month in 2022, it represented the 3rd largest deforestation for January in 16 years. 🌳

The data, released this Friday (17), are from Deforestation Alert System (SAD) of the imazon, which has been monitoring the forest using satellite images since 2008. According to the historical series of this monitoring, the deforestation in January was only greater than that recorded in 2023 in two years: 2015 (288 km²) and 2022 (261 km²).
