Lula speaks at COP27

One of the highlights of this Wednesday (16) was the president-elect's speech.

On his social networks, journalist Patrick Greenfield – from the British newspaper The Guardian – reported that Lula's speech was one of the most anticipated and that, earlier, a crowd gathered in the room where Amazon governors handed the president-elect a document called Amazon Charter: a common agenda for climate transition. “Senior diplomats, heads of NGOs and the world's media flock to the event trying to catch a glimpse of the Brazilian president-elect when he arrives,” he said.

Among the various topics covered, Lula stated that the world urgently needs a financial mechanism for losses and damages to face the consequences of climate change.

G20 demonstration

After the leak of preliminary text of this year's G20 agreement, published this Tuesday (15) by the newspaper The Guardian*, caused disappointment as it watered down the terms on financing for climate adaptation and did not mention a 2023 date for the payment of the expected US$100 billion per year. The group published an announcement (*) this Wednesday morning (16) – during the meeting in Bali, Indonesia – which offered some relief:

“Noting IPCC assessments that the impact of climate change will be much smaller with a temperature increase of 1,5°C compared to 2°C, we have decided to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1,5° W. This will require actions and withpromesignificant and effective development of all countries”.

Later, the G20 Final Declaration was released, where leaders agreed to pursue efforts to limit the rise in global temperatures to 1,5°C, including accelerating action to gradually reduce coal use.
