COP27 diary: see what was highlighted on the 7th day of the Climate Summit

Check out some of the highlights this Saturday (12) on the 7th day of the Climate Summit (COP27) in Egypt. We had "authorized" protests and the announcement of new goals to contain the climate crisis.

This Saturday (12) the topic of the day at COP was the debate on climate adaptation e farming.

“Authorized” protests

Although protests were banned on the streets of Egypt – which has a strong repressive stance against acts – a demonstration with the presence of hundreds of activists was allowed inside the pavilions of the COP27.

Participants demanded greater effectiveness on the topic of losses and damages – the compensation that less developed countries demand for the climate crisis –, the rights of women and children and political prisoners.

Marina Silva sets the tone for the new government

The former Minister of the Environment and elected federal deputy Marina Silva (Rede-SP) spoke at the Brazilian hub of the event this Saturday (12). She highlighted the goal of combating all criminal practices to achieve zero deforestation in Brazilian biomes and that Brazil will protect the Amazon with its own means and will not condition it to the arrival of international resources.

“We want to get involved”

US climate envoy John Kerry said his country “fully” supports measures to address losses and damages, one of the most controversial issues of these negotiations, and “100% ready” to discuss the issue in detail.

“We engaged with our friends to work on the proposals,” he said at a news conference at COP27 this Saturday (12). 

“We are 100% ready, [President Joe Biden] said, to discuss the issue of losses and damages. That's why it's on the agenda. We want to close.”

Discussions about gender and water begin next week, on the 14th. Tuesday (15th) is the day to talk about civil society and energy. On the 16th, the subject is biodiversity, and on Thursday (17th), climate solutions.

The United Nations (UN) International Conference on Climate Change – COP27 – began last Sunday (6), in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. COP is the UN's major annual event whose objective is to discuss actions aimed at combating climate change.
