The document “lays out in very clear terms where we are, but also points out that there is always a possibility, with a significant global effort, of reaching the 1,5°C objective”, highlighted Simon Stiell, UN executive secretary for change climate. “The window of opportunity shrinks, but it still exists”, he added, on the sidelines of a preparatory meeting for the 28th UN climate conference (COP28).

The IPCC released this Monday (20) its sixth synthesis report since the creation of the group, a summary of all knowledge about the global warming. Despite increasingly alarming predictions, the report intends to send “a message of hope”, pointing out that more decisive actions would make it possible to achieve the goal of containing the rise in the planet's temperature to 1,5ºC in relation to the pre-industrial era.
According to the IPCC, warming will reach this barrier in the years 2030-2035, and has already increased, on average, 1,2°C. This projection is valid in almost all humanity's greenhouse gas emission scenarios. curto deadline established by the group of scientists.
Stiell called on the world to act, but addressed, in particular, the G20, a group that brings together the most advanced economies on the planet. “We know that 80% of emissions were produced by the G20. It’s a very clear starting point,” said the UN official.

These countries represent 85% of the world's GDP, and therefore have “the technology and financial capacity to respond to the crisis”, highlighted the secretary.
