Denmark has an unprecedented drought since 2006, after two weeks without rain

Despite being a rainy country, Denmark has not recorded precipitation for more than two weeks, something never seen in 17 years — reports the meteorological agency, which attributed the phenomenon to climate change.

Much of Scandinavia is experiencing a particularly dry late spring (autumn in Brazil), which increases the risk of forest fires.

May has already been the driest month in Denmark in the last 15 years. There is also no rain forecast for the next few days, according to Danish authorities.

“If we don’t record precipitation today, we will have had 15 consecutive days without precipitation. It is the longest period without precipitation on record since January 1, 2006,” said the national meteorological institute, DMI.

Denmark is located in a temperate zone of northern Europe and rarely experiences long periods without rain.

“It appears that the lengthening of periods without precipitation is related to climate change, but this is an area that is still being investigated,” explained DMI.

On Tuesday, risk management agency Beredskabstyrelsen announced that May 2023 was Denmark's driest in 15 years. In 2007 and 2008, 14 consecutive days without precipitation were recorded.
