Excess ozone in the atmosphere increases the risk of heart problems, says study

Air pollution due to excess ozone leads to a higher percentage of hospitalizations for heart problems, according to a study released this Friday (10). ❤️ In the publication in the European Heart Journal, a group of Chinese scientists analyzed admissions to hospitals in 70 cities in China between 2015 and 2017.

The team studied data from 258 million people (approximately 18% of China's total population) and compared it to real-time air quality in these citiessystem. (🇬🇧)

⚠️ Ozone, even compared to other pollutants, was directly associated with more than 3% of hospitalizations for heart problems and heart attacks.

The WHO considers 100 micrograms of ozone per cubic meter of air to be the danger limit.

For every increase of 10 micrograms per cubic meter of air, there was an increase in the number of hospitalizations for heart attacks of 0,75%, and 0,40% in the case of cerebral embolisms.

“Although these increases may seem modest”, the impact “grew more than 20 times” when ozone levels exceeded 200 micrograms during the summer, study author Shaowei Wu, from Xi'an Jiaotong University, explained to AFP.

O ozone in the upper layers of the atmosphere it is essential to block ultraviolet (UV) rays, but at the level of the Earth's surface, is one of the main causes of pollution in many cities.

It emerges into the atmosphere through a chemical reaction, when polluting agents, mostly emitted by cars and companies, combine in a reaction with sunlight.

Health problems caused by another type of pollution, small particle pollution, known as PM2.5, lead to 8,8 million premature deaths per year.
