France wants to accelerate the reduction of CO2 emissions

The French government revealed, this Monday (22), a plan to accelerate cuts in its greenhouse gas emissions, with the aim of reducing them by 50% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels.

“To achieve our objectives in 2030, we must double the pace of reducing our greenhouse gas emissions”, warned the Prime Minister, Élisabeth Borne, before the National Council for Ecological Transition.

Transport, buildings, agriculture, industry... All sectors will have to do their part if France wants to reach the 2030 target, a step on the path to carbon neutrality that the European Union (EU) seeks to achieve by mid-century.

Until now, Paris aspired to a 40% reduction in emissions, but managed to reduce emissions by just 25% in 2022. To achieve the objective, it will have to do in the next eight years what it did in the last 32.

In the transport sector, which represents more than 30% of emissions, the government is betting on electric cars and shared vehicles, but also on measures to supply goods in a context of rising home deliveries.

President Emmanuel Macron's government also defends the efficient renovation of housing and changes in heating, gradually leaving diesel and gas-powered heaters behind. In agriculture, the plan targets livestock and nitrogen fertilizers.

After the publication of the plan, of which many measures are already being implemented, a series of meetings will be held to finalize it before a meeting chaired by Macron.

One of the main outstanding issues is how to finance billions of euros in public and private investments to implement the measures.
