Guterres calls for action from world leaders against global warming

The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, asked this Wednesday (14) that world leaders act against global warming and "lower the temperature" of the planet so as not to "drown" the world.

“I just returned from Pakistan, where I looked out the window at the future, a future of permanent and omnipresent climate chaos on an unimaginable scale.”, Guterres said at a press conference, days before the arrival of dozens of leaders from around the world for the high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly in New York.

“What is happening in Pakistan demonstrates the insufficiency of the global response to the climate crisis and the betrayal and injustice at its heart.”. During his visit to the country – devastated by floods – Guterres said that “I had never seen climate carnage” on this scale and blamed richer nations for the destruction.

“My message to the world leaders gathered here is clear: lower the temperature, now. Don’t flood the world today, don’t drown it tomorrow.”, said this Wednesday (14), denouncing “decades of intransigence on the part of large emitters”, in particular the Group of 20.

“If a third of the G20 countries were underwater today, as they could be tomorrow, perhaps it would be easier for them to make drastic cuts in emissions”.

He also criticized big fossil fuel companies, accusing them of “kill the planet” to obtain the greatest possible amount of commodities.

The Secretary-General also lamented the divisions within the international community and said: “geostrategic divisions are the greatest since at least the Cold War. And they are paralyzing the global response to the dramatic challenges we face.”, including war, climate change, poverty, hunger and inequality, he added.

“The solidarity envisaged in the United Nations Charter is being devoured by the acids of nationalism and self-interest”, reinforced.
