Forest fires leave dead in Algeria

At least 26 people have died and dozens have been injured in forest fires in northern Algeria.

The announcement was made by the Algerian Minister of the Interior, Kamel Beldjoud, this Wednesday (17).

Roads were blocked and flames were burning near some cities in the country, while authorities mobilized helicopters to try to contain them – according to local press reports.

“There are 39 active fires in 14 wilayas (prefectures)”, reported the Civil Defense, highlighting that the El Tarf wilaya records the highest number of fires (16), some of which are still active.

With the 26 deaths this Wednesday (17), the balance for the summer of 2022 is 30 deaths.
