Forest fires leave new emissions records in 2022

Although emissions from forest fires tend to decrease on a global scale, some regions recorded record data in 2022, such as Latin America — according to the annual balance released by the European Copernicus program (CAMS), this Tuesday (13). From the beginning of the year until December 10, around 1.455 megatonnes of carbon emissions were produced as a result of these forest and vegetation fires around the world.

Between January and March, some regions of Paraguay and Argentina suffered forest fires unprecedented, due to a heat wave and drought conditions, causing the greatest fire emissions of the last 20 years – reported the Copernicus Atmospheric Surveillance Service (CAMS).

In Brazil, the state of Amazonas also broke its record and, between July and October, recorded the highest total emission from burned of the last 20 years, of just over 22 megatons, five more than in 2021, its previous record.
