Invasion of Ukraine may have accelerated the planet's energy transition

The International Energy Agency (IEA) said on Thursday (27) that, as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, global energy-related greenhouse gas emissions are expected to peak in 2025, following increased investment. in renewable energy caused by the "profound reorientation" of energy markets.

A few days before the start of the World Climate Conference (COP27), in Egypt, the IEA also warns of “divisions” between rich and poor countries in terms of investments in low-carbon energy and calls for “greater international efforts to reduce the worrying difference.”

“The responses of governments around the world to this energy crisis indicate a historic turning point,” said IEA Director Fatih Birol at a press conference in which he reviewed the agency’s 2022 annual report.

“This crisis has effectively accelerated the transition to green energy,” he added. “Energy markets and public policies have changed since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, not just for the present, but for the decades to come,” Birol said in the report.

Although there are countries that seek to increase or diversify the supply of oil and gas - fossil fuels that emit a lot of CO2 -, many are studying accelerating structural changes towards clean energy, points out the agency, linked to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). ).
