London Marathon will charge foreign participants a climate fee to offset emissions

The organizers of the London Marathon have announced an initiative in which they will literally be running for carbon neutrality. The sporting event will charge a climate tax to international participants for their emissions during travel. The amount raised will be used to pay for removing carbon from the air.

A London Marathon Events (LME) said that the initiative would be financed by a fee of 26 pounds (R$156) charged to international corridors. The funds will be used to pay the carbon removal company CUR8 to remove 280 tons of CO2 from the air.

Other measures will also be implemented by the event, such as the change from diesel generators to hydrotreated vegetable oil generators.

LME also revealed that it will start using electric vehicles and will encourage participants to use public transport. In this way, the company intends to reduce around 800 tons of carbon per year through removals and reduction of emissions, reaching net zero emissions by 2030.

In the 2022 edition of the marathon, there were around 9.920 international participants, with 95% of the total emissions coming from their travels. This year, the race took place in April, and the next edition will be in the same month of 2024.
