Mauna Loa, in Hawaii, the largest active volcano in the world, erupted for the first time in almost 40 years – American authorities said this Monday (28).

Lava began flowing around midnight on Sunday (27) in the crater of Mauna Loa, one of five volcanoes in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

Hawaii officials said no evacuation orders were issued, although the crater area and several roads in the region were closed.

The Hawaiian archipelago has six active volcanoes. Mauna Loa, the largest on Earth, has erupted 33 times since 1843, according to the USGS.

The most recent eruption, in 1984, lasted 22 days and produced lava flows that reached around seven kilometers from Hilo, a city where around 44 people now live.
