Thousands protest in Germany calling for more action against climate change

Thousands of people, most of them teenagers and young people, protested, this Friday (15), in Berlin and other German cities to ask Chancellor Olaf Scholz (center left) for more ambition in his actions against climate change.

Presented as the 13th global climate strike, these demonstrations were organized by the international collective “Fridays for Future”, driven by the Swedish activist Greta Thunberg.

Around 250 demonstrations were held across Germany, with the main motto being the “end of fossil energy”.

There were around 12.000 protesters in Berlin, 8.500 in Munich and at least 10.000 in Hamburg, according to data from security forces.

“The clock moves forward”, “There is no planet B”, “The benefits of today, the end of the world tomorrow” were some of the messages displayed on posters carried by protesters in Berlin, who protested near the chancellery headquarters.

“A cabinet of experts assessed that the government's objectives are very unambitious and will not even be able to achieve them”, lamented Paul Günther, 19 years old, a Geography student, who wanted to denounce “our chancellor's dishonesty in the face of the climate crisis ”.

The German Executive, formed by a coalition of Social Democrats, Greens and Liberals, has set ambitious goals, such as obtaining 80% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030. But environmentalists doubt they will be met.
