In Brazil, 4 million were affected by dam collapses in the last 80 years, says Fiocruz

More than 4 million people have been affected by construction and dam failures in Brazil over the last 80 years. This number was released in the study “Health, water, energy, environment and work: weaving knowledge in the promotion of sustainable and healthy territories”, carried out by the Osvaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), in partnership with the Movement of People Affected by Dams (MAB).

O Fiocruz study analyzed the main impacts of dams in the health of Brazilians, from 1940 to 2022, analyzing theses, dissertations, articles and reports published in the last 8 decades.

According to research, dams have been responsible for a series of human rights violations of affected populations. One example is the right to housing, which was disrespected when residents were forced to abandon their homes for the installation of dozens of hydroelectric plants during the period of the last military governments.

In the case of the dam collapse in Mariana, in 2015, and in Brumadinho, in 2019, both in Minas Gerais, the cutting-edge study that was carried out violation of the right to life of local populations.
