UN announces agreement on carbon neutrality for aviation by 2050

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a United Nations (UN) agency, announced this Friday (7) an agreement for the sector to achieve carbon emissions neutrality in 2050.

Representatives from the 193 member states gathered for the ICAO assembly, based in Montreal, and reached “a historic agreement on an ambitious collective long-term carbon neutrality goal for 2050”, the ICAO posted on Twitter.

“It’s an excellent result,” a European diplomatic source told AFP, specifying that “only four countries, including China, had expressed reservations.”

The role of air transport is fundamental in the climate crisis. The sector, currently responsible for approximately 2,5% to 3% of global CO2 emissions, is having difficulty switching to renewable energy, although the airline sector and energy companies are working hard to do so.

According to airlines, creating carbon-free aviation involves an investment of US$1,55 trillion between 2021 and 2050.
