Worst drought in the last 60 years in China threatens harvest phase

China is suffering from excessive heat and little rain. Did you know that in 60 years, so much heat has never been recorded as it is now? The climate interferes with crop yields and harms field productivity.

China's autumn harvest is under threat because of heat waves and drought. Since the beginning of meteorological counts – 60 years ago – a period with so much heat and no rain has never been observed.

A statement from the Ministry of Agriculture released this Tuesday (23) warned about the protection of crops and asked that “each unit of water be used with care”.

Drought is a huge problem for rice and soybean plantations, which require a large amount of water. The Yangtze River – the country's main source of drinking water – is dry in several stretches.

Residents of several cities in China receive warnings about the heat wave, which also led to the electricity rationing. “It’s the worst heat wave ever recorded in China,” Liu Junyan, director for climate and energy at Greenpeace’s Southeast Asia unit, told AFP.

Junyan further explained that the climate crisis is intensifying and “it is likely that heat records will be broken again next year”.
