'Forever Chemicals': Millions of Americans Have Contaminated Water

Drinking water, consumed by millions of Americans in hundreds of communities across the United States, is contaminated with dangerous levels of toxic chemicals (PFAS), according to data released on Thursday (17) by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The data shows that drinking water systems – serving small cities to large cities – contain measurable levels of so-called “eternal chemicals”, a family of durable compounds long used in a variety of commercial products but which are now known to be harmful.

The water of up to 26 million Americans is contaminated, according to an analysis of new EPA data by Environmental working group (EWG), a non-profit organization based in Washington DC.

Studies have linked the chemicals to cancer, immunodeficiencies, reproductive harm and developmental effects in children.
