Democratic Republic of Congo, Brazil and Indonesia prepare common front at COP27

Democratic Republic of Congo, Brazil and Indonesia, three tropical forest countries, are working on a common position in climate negotiations - the Congolese government announced this Tuesday (4), in Kinshasa, on the sidelines of a preparatory meeting for the COP27 conference.

“We believe that there will be the conclusion of a concrete agreement (…), it could happen before, or during, COP27”, in November in Egypt, said the Congolese Minister of the Environment, Eve Bazaiba, accompanied by representatives from Brazil and Indonesia, at the “pre-COP27”, in Kinshasa.

Intended to prepare the ground for the Sharm el-Sheikh summit in Egypt, the informal ministerial meeting ends this Tuesday (4), before more regional discussions on Wednesday (5).

“Brazil, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Indonesia, three tropical forest basins that provide solutions to the climate challenge, could not pass up this opportunity before the COP” to continue the debates that began last year at COP26, in Glasgow, continued the minister Congolese.

According to her, there are “very important” issues common to the Amazon, the Congo Basin and Indonesia, whose forests are major carbon sinks. Among these challenges are “the felling of trees, the exploitation of other natural resources and the carbon credit market”.
